French

Introduction

French is the second most widely learned foreign language after English, and the sixth most widely spoken language in the world. French is also the only language, alongside English, that is taught in every country in the world. The ability to speak French and English is an advantage on the international job market. A knowledge of French opens the doors of French companies in France and other French-speaking parts of the world (Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, and the continent of Africa). As the world’s fifth biggest economy and a leading destination for foreign investment, France is a key economic partner.

At Xàbia International College pupils start to study  French and German in year 7 and they then choose which language they want to continue studying in year 8. Learning both languages is also possible for language lovers.

Teaching

In French, we currently deliver the KS3 French curriculum using The Tricolore interactive course books supplemented with a wealth of material designed and produced by our experienced teacher to support and challenge students.

Our aim is for our students to develop all four skills -listening, reading, writing and speaking- so regular class activities include pair or small group  speaking tasks; listening comprehension exercises for both gist and detail; reading a range of different types of texts; discovering more about French-speaking people; writing about yourself, your family,  your town, etc.

Why study French at XIC?

Our French native teacher’s aim is to enthuse and motivate our pupils, while equipping them with the skills needed to communicate fluently in French, incorporating a good range of key vocabulary and structures. To practise what is learned in the classroom, like ordering a delicious croissant, trips are also organised.

Using on-screen books and online activities and games makes learning the language fun as, in a technological world, pupils find it easier to engage themselves in the learning process.
